UPDATE – The Truth Behind the Keystone Pipeline Denial – Warren Buffett?

Okay…so this is weird…Bloomberg has killed the link to this story “Buffett’s Burlington Northern Among Winners From Keystone Denial.” (my original post is at the bottom of all this).  If you search “Buffett’s Burlington Northern Among Winners From Keystone Denial,” you’ll find literally pages of references to the article.  But the link is now dead.  Now I’m not a conspiracy guy…but it’s pretty weird, don’t you think?  Buffet has apparently been investing big in the railroads.  (Hat tip to Dawn W.).

It’s all so convenient.  Especially when your friend, the President, has the ability in one quick move to help your railroad make millions.   The article said that all the oil that would have gone by pipeline would now need to be shipped by rail.  And the citizens will pay extra for that, of course.  The original piece that has been sent down the memory hole said that shipping by rail would add $3 per barrel to the price of oil.

And it only gets weirder.  Apparently Buffett’s secretary will be sitting in the First Lady’s private box for the State of the Union Address.

Anyone know how to find a cached version?  I’m struggling with that.  Here’s a screen shot of a portion of the page which can be found next to the first link on the Google search of the URL for the original story:

I know, I know…it’s all just a conspiracy in my mind, right?  Or did someone from the White House, Buffett’s office or Bloomberg (or more likely all three) really get involved to make this disappear from the web?  This story certainly is inconveniently timed and very messy.  It definitely dirties up the optics for Buffett and the President, with Buffett’s secretary sitting in the Obama family box for the SOTU.

Here’s another update from reader Dawn WThis is a link to the full story in Human Events.

My original post is below:

Is Billionaire supporter Warren Buffet part of the reason that the President denied a permit for the construction of the Keystone pipeline?  It certainly smells pretty bad.  But then, so does much of this Presidency.  Crony capitalism…it’s not just for Republicans!  In fact, the President seems to have raised it to a fine art.

Very interesting, three years ago I would have told you it was your imagination but knowing what I know now…it looks bad for Buffet and Bloomberg ..

Pipelines won’t help transport you to the FEMA camps, but BN will?

Russ…they took it down. I’ve reposted with a screen shot and a link to someone else who had it. Very strange…I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

Same article, I think. Copied the text as well if you need that. Or if this disappears.

At least the SF Chronicle is not in on the conspiracy:

And here last week we all wondered if Obama was crazy to walk away from Keystone just to butter up his environmentalist allies. Now we know we just hadn’t thought hard enough about whose interests the pipelines threatened. So Obama was protecting his beloved railroads and his financial backers. Interesting. Glad you’re keeping this alive.

I know I read that same article this morning. As of right now, all the discussions about the article – and there are a lot of them all over the place because a LOT of people read it – are up, but the links to the article seem to be dead.

biggovernment.com seems to have reproduced the entire article, seen here:

This may not be the original article from Bloomberg, although it is the one I read this morning.

This isn’t the first time the Bloomberg bosses moved in to squash a politically inconvenient story.

I caught them here in November.

Good thing PIPA and SOPA are tabled for the moment, or I’d be in trouble for keeping a copy that I retrieved from Google’s cache.

Apparently Bloomberg news must’ve been catching a lot of grief or someone or several somones at Bloomberg had a change of heart or were suddenly struck with a case of ethics…

The link is now working at 2250 CST: Buffett’s Burlington Northern Among Pipeline Winners

By Jim Efstathiou Jr. – Jan 23, 2012 5:26 PM CT

This link was NOT working at 2130 CST…

Note this part of the Bloomberg news story: ‘The State Department denied TransCanada a permit on Jan. 18, saying there was not enough time to study the proposal by Feb. 21, a deadline Congress imposed on President Barack Obama. Calgary-based TransCanada has said it intends to re-apply with a route that avoids an environmentally sensitive region of Nebraska, something the Obama administration encouraged.‘…

    Really?!?!

Now check this story out in Yahoo news originally from those leftie tree huggers at the Nation: State Department Issues Flawed Blessing of Keystone XL

By George Zornick | The Nation – Fri, Aug 26, 2011

    (1st two paragraphs)

The Nation — The State Department released its final environmental impact assessment of the Keystone XL pipeline Friday, and it’s just as bad as some feared—perhaps worse. The report concludes, as did two prior versions, that there would be “no significant impact” on natural resources near the pipeline route, while also downplaying the potential for increased greenhouse gas emissions.

In a conference call with reporters, Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs Dr. Kerri-Ann Jones stressed that “this is not the rubberstamp for this project. The permit that is required for this process has not been approved or rejected at all…

Not enough time to study the Keystone project?!?!

Well the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association think differently: NPRA Says Claims of Keystone XL Opponents Flawed and Alarmist

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — “The Keystone XL pipeline proposal has been reviewed intensively by federal agencies and has been shown to be safe, environmentally sound and in America’s national interest,” National Petrochemical & Refiners Association President Charles T. Drevna said today.

About two months ago, maybe less, I was watching CNBC(I know, it’s a propaganda site for the most part), and they mentioned Buffett had bought a large interest in BN Railroad. And I wondered why, then looked at the map, and knew the Keystone Pipeline would be dead. Obama killed the pipeline as a favor to Buffett for getting behind the millionaire’s tax. See how that works people! It’s the Chicago way, baby.

  25. John Looney said...

Have you heard about the federal program for free cellphones (phone AND service) for indigents?

  26. Rick Caird said...

This is reminding me of all the vitriol directed toward the Koch brothers. The Keystone XL pipeline decision was wrong. But, it was decided so as to please the far left base. It was not crony capitalism designed to benefit Buffet.

I think the left does themselves a great disservice when they attack the Koch brothers solely because they donate to Libertarian causes. Similarly, we do the same when we try to identify Buffet as the reason behind Obama’s decision on the Keystone Pipeline

  27. J. Knight said...

Rick, I wouldn’t be that suspicious, either, but the timing of Buffett’s purchase tells the tale. Buffett just recently bought this stake in BN, just as he recently bought a big stake in Bank of America. I hear there will be some really good news for them as well, as the state governments are going to settle with the large banks. Wow, that Buffett guy is really lucky….or he has inside information. You decide.
